He realized that Chinese calligraphy and painting were intertwined. Years of practice of calligraphy nourished Liu’s painting skill. Now, he is a member of the China Public Diplomacy Association, China Artists Association, China Mural Association, an expert judge for the National Art Fund, and a special researcher of the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. He used to work as the chief craftsman of Yangzhou Lacquer Factory and the president of Yangzhou Chinese Painting Academy. ![]() He has always cherished the “curiosity” about art he developed as a child.īorn in April 1957 in Taizhou City, Jiangsu Province, Liu Nanping successively studied in Yangzhou Arts and Crafts School, Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute, and Chinese National Academy of Arts. In both educational and practical spheres, Liu contributed heavily to the development of calligraphy, engraving, Chinese painting, print, mural, lacquerware craft and even environmental sculpture. “I wondered how I could become such a good painter.” “I thought the painting Unity of All Ethnic Groups and its painter were really amazing,” he exclaimed. Liu was astonished and forgot to go home for dinner. The work was an oil painting depicting vivid figures from 56 ethnic groups surrounding Chairman Mao Zedong. ![]() One day after school, he saw a teacher at the cultural center in his hometown in the process of painting. Over five decades later, Liu Nanping, honorary president of Yangzhou Chinese Painting Academy, still clearly remembers first seeing a painter in action as a child.
